Background

MOLAN builds on the outcomes of previous network projects launched from within the Conseil Européen pour les Langues / European Language Council (CEL/ELC), which were designed to enhance, among other things, the quantity and quality of language teaching and learning at higher education level.

Conseil Européen pour les Langues / European Language Council (CEL/ELC)

The CEL/ELC is a permanent and independent association aimed at promoting individual and societal multilingualism. Membership is open to all institutions of higher education and all national and international associations with a special interest in languages.
CEL/ELC
Thematic Network Project in the Area of Languages III (TNP 3) (2003-2006)

TNP 3 aimed at arranging a structured, comprehensive and continuous dialogue between higher education institutions and other stakeholders about changing and future linguistic and intercultural needs on the European labour market. Its overarching objective was to bring about a clear understanding on the part of all stakeholders of the linguistic and language-related needs arising from European integration and globalisation both in higher education itself and in the non-academic environments as well as a willingness on the part of universities to gear the content, learning outcomes, and quantity of provision to the needs identified.
TNP 3
Network Project for the Decentralised and Centralised Dissemination of TNP3 Results and Outcomes (TNP3-D) (2006-2007)

The outcomes and results of TNP3 were disseminated at four regional and a European conference attended by representatives of universities and other stakeholders.
TNP 3 - D
European Network for the Promotion of Language Learning Among all Undergraduates (ENLU) (2003-2006)

The main objective of ENLU was to create a trans-European network of higher education institutions and other stakeholder organisations with a view to achieving a breakthrough in the area of “languages for all”. ENLU sought to promote language learning and the acquisition of intercultural skills among undergraduates.

MOLAN maintenance

The MOLAN network project officially ended on 28 February 2011. However, the project Web site and the MOLAN Information System will be kept alive by the CEL/ELC for the foreseeable future – and this for two reasons.
